WHAT & WHERE IS KULAFUMBI?

1724670-982768-thumbnail.jpg 'Kulafumbi' is our family home in Kenya, East Africa, situated on the confluence of the Athi and Mtito Rivers. The property borders the Tsavo National Park - with no fences between us and the Park, the wildlife comes and goes of its own free will and treats our land as its own. As for us, when we are ensconced here, it's all too easy to ignore all the troubles in the world...

PEOPLE LIKE US

"We are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems..."

22nd October 2008 : Red Dawn brings no rain

This morning I got up before dawn to make my husband a cup of tea before he set off on the long drive to Nairobi (how nice of me is that?!). As always when I do drag myself out of bed at this hour of the morning I inevitably wonder why I don't do it every day...the air is cool and fresh, and the dawn over the Yatta Plateau and the river is always breathtaking...

Beautiful as the dawn may have been, it did not bring the rain today...Look how thin our poor impalas are, with their protruding ribs and sharp hip bones - and they're the lucky ones who live near the river where at least there is some green vegetation to be had.

The river did rise today, evidence of heavy rain upcountry, but still no sign of any here. The rising water made the impala look twice, and eventually bound away...
