This Martial Eagle killed a dik-dik in the riverbed just below our house, on 09 October 2007. After eating about a third of the antelope, it abandoned its kill overnight. Amazingly, the carcass was not stolen by a scavenger and the eagle was able to return to feed in the morning.

Kulafumbi, bordering the Tsavo National Park in Kenya, is a paradise for eagles - the river attracts a lot of animals and birds (which are prey species for eagles), and the riverbed is a useful hunting ground.

It's not always the big guys who come out on top - this series of photographs shows an African Fish Eagle, just below our house, stealing a fish from a crocodile. It took the eagle a couple of aerial circuits to drive the crocodile away, but it won in the end and flew away with its booty of a half-eaten Barbus. Read the full story here... -
